Amazing Songs & Other Delights #12 - The Dream Baby Dream by (Songs for Tânia) Francisco Silva & Raquel Pinheiro (Songs for Tânia)
Amazing Songs & Other Delights #12 is called Dream Baby Dream (Songs for Tânia) and was weaved between Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem) and I in loving memory of our friend Tânia Pereira Mendes who died seven years ago this month. It can be listened to tomorrow 2:20-4pm on Yé Yé Radio.
Tânia was a member of Fórum Sons - an online community for music lovers where either many of us met of got to know each other better - loved the stars, the cosmos, music, to dance, and, of course, to dream. The 21 songs we chose for Dream Baby Dream, including Suicide's one are Tânia to a T.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #11 - The Kick & Backbeat edition by Raquel Pinheiro @ Yé Yé's mixcloud
Amazing Songs & Other Delights #11 - The Kick & Backbeat are 22 songs and one instrumental with druns, and, or percussion, and drummers in mind and can now be found on Yé Yé's mixcloud - tracklist below. I mixed things a little. Some drummers are not playing with their main band, or the band they become known for ( Simon Gilbert), here with Futon rather than Suede), others are playing a little differently than what is usually thought of them (Dave Grohl). A couple or so aren't even seen as drummers, or drumming is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of them - Josh Homme, Mick Harvey. All in all I choose songs I like, with drummers I like. A few of those that are important to me are missing, Pete de Freitas, John Convertino, etc. The start of the show is the late Charlie Watts, that has a double appearance. And nothing like a fabulous yellow (my favourite colour) drum kit to make it all brighter and, well, drummy. 🙂 Rui Pimenta & Pedro Tenreiro allowed me to push the envelope and come up with an a hour and a half show. 😃
(the yellow drum kit is a Val di Fiemme made by Andrew Johnston of Repercussion Drums)

Old Jerusalem, M.Ou.Co., Porto, 02.10.2021.
Old Jerusalem © Afonso Dorido |
by Raquel Pinheiro
Out of the ordinary, this review took longer than usual. It matches the out of the ordinary, in a good way, concert by Old Jerusalem, Saturday October 2nd at M.Ou.Co, a new hotel in Porto, that has a concert room. The concert come with many firsts, my first time at M.Ou.Co, my first time in a room with so many people close to each other audience since the pandemic, my first Old Jerusalem concert in a while.
Old Jerusalem, that are celebrating their 20th anniversary, presented their eighth album, Certain Rivers in a stripped down version. Francisco Silva, the singer-songwriter behind the moniker played solo, in an intimate concert for voice and acoustic guitar.
Alone upon the stage, Francisco sang from the new album, including its opening song High high up that hill - on the record sang by Peter Broderick - from previous albums, and he also presented us with beautiful renditions of 2/15 (poem by Rabindranath Tagore, music by Mick Turner & Will Oldham Blood, Red Bird (Smog), Shivers (Rowland S. Howard), Forever in My Life (Prince) and Katy song (Mark Kozelek).
The detailed naming of the songs covered is not in vain. One of the things Francisco spoke to us about, before or between songs, was the tradition of handing down, covering, passing along, been inspired by someone else's songs. Picking on and continue giving life to existing songs is both a way to show them to a different audience as well as make them ours.
Music and words share a confessional, warm, feeling, here and there punctuated by humour - Love & Cows - wrapping us in world of beauty, emotions, quiet spoken drama, even if depiced events may be anything but. Love in its many faces, loss of faith (and regaining it in something else?), dreams, youth and its flippancy, all emanate from Francisco's songs or from the ones he choose to cover.
Enhanced, punctuated, accentuated, by the tone, or lack thereof, of the acoustic guitar, voice and words are transported to a land of magic, lifting us along. Old Jerusalem at M.Ou.Co was a beautiful, cherished concert, that, at least in my memory, shall last.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #11 is called The Kick & Backbeat edition and it is all about the drums and the men and women behind them. It is longer than usual, at nearly 90 minutes and it airs tomorrow, Monday 11th, 2:35-4pm (London time) @ Yé Yé Radio.
From Charlie Watts to Maureen Tucker, through Samuel Palitos, J.D. Samson, Mick Joyce, Ginger Baker or Janet Weiss there are 23 songs to be listened to.
This show was a long time coming. The possibility of interviewing Simon Gilbert propelled it and Charlie Watts' death sealed it. Drummers have a special place in my heart. It was a jazz drummer, Lino Oliveira, that taught me pretty much everyting I know music wise - but, for classic music and music theory. A little later, in 1986, it was another drummer, Carlos Moura, that helped me with my bass and a few other things.
There are beloved dummers missing, like Pete de Freitas of Echo & The Bunnymen. The show is not meant to be a "best drummers" one. Rather, a showcase of drums in songs, be it songs driver by drums or with drums more in the background. And a selection of good songs with drums and, or, percussion that I like.
The beautiful yellow drum kit in the photo is called Val di Fiemme kit and was made by Andrew Johnston of RePercussion Drums.
Special thanks to Simon Gilbert for introducing me to Andrew's amazing drums.
