Amazing Songs & Other Delights # 21 - The They Play a Strat, So Does Carlos edition by Carlos Fortes & Raquel Pinhero

The Fender American Stratocaster Grey with 10-position switch (Bula installation) of the illustrative photo for Amazing Songs & Other Delights #21 The They Play a Strat, So Does Carlos edition belongs to Carlos Fortes (Mão Morta/Um Zero Amarelo) - it was previously owned by António Manuel Ribeiro (UHF). The show airs tomorrow (Monday 28th) on Yé Yé Radio: https://yeyeradio.com/ or on the app from about 2:40pm to 4pm (gmt). Carlos and I selected 18 songs played/written with a Stratocaster or predominantly played/written with one, including two of his – Ventos Animais and Anjos Marotos by Mão Morta - Carlos picked the first, I the second. The Stratocaster was given its name in 1953 by Don Randall, Fender’s sales chief. The Fender Stratocaster, introduced in 1954, has several differences and innovations from the Telecaster. The two-horned shape was adapted from the Precision Bass by Freddy Tavares, it has three pickups, rounded edges and body contour to make it more comfortable and came in a vibrato and a non-vibrato model. It was also the first time that Fender used a sunburst finish. Back to the songs. There is a joint choice, The Shadow's Apache with Hank Marvin on the Strat, songs in which the guitarist isn’t usually associated with a Strat – Bernard Butler, Noel Gallagher here with a Nash Strat (like with Telecasters no all Stratocasters are Fender) – and a number of songs with more or less proper Strat men and women. As with its twin Telecaster show of a fortnight ago the songs go through different eras and styles from Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water with its trademark riff from the hand of Ritchie Blackmore to Bonnie Raitt covering Talking Heads' Burning Down The House. We pretty much broke all the rules, if existing. Along with Carlos’ two songs there are two Bob Dylan songs, one with him as the Strat man another with Mark Knofler as such. Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison appear both on this and the Telecaster edition. And so on. :-)

“We’re Boogarins, from Goiânas”. Well-paced riffs, rubbing against pop-rock sounds, quickly captivated everyone who came to CCOP. “It’s hot in here” said, a smiling Fernando “Dinho” Almeida to the pick up lines the audience - with a strong Brazilian presence - that filled the room threw at him. Lulled by the caramelized voice of “Dinho”, shoulders and hips surrendered to the enchanting lullaby of the band from Goiânia. The quartet, in a peaceful symbiosis with the audience, played several songs from Manchaca compilation (Vol.1 and 2) including from their albums Lá Vem Morte (2017) and Sombrou Dúvida (2019), along with new songs, performed with a virtuosity full of freshness for about an hour and a half, including a well-deserved encore.
If the Boogarins' sound discourse carries some resonances, like Tame Impala, the creativity and freshness with which they roam the universal territories of psychedelic rock is undeniable, tempered with the uniqueness of the voice and stage presence of "Dinho", lending them a very particular solar character that has given the band deserved international recognition, performing in stages such as Paredes de Coura, Rock in Rio or Lollapaloza.
Manuel Molarinho - Baleia, Baleia, Baleia © Telma Mota |

The duo Baleia, Baleia, Baleia performed in Maus Hábitos before a well filled room. Stripped of his experimentalist heteronym of O Manipulador, Manuel Molarinho’s bilingual voice and bass and Ricardo Cabral’s drums brought to the stage a fresh punk that quickly heated the venue. Barechested on stage, irony and vitality, pantomime and authenticity; Baleia, Baleia, Baleia went through the tracks of their latest album Suicídio Comercial in an energetic and competent tone slightly evocative of the 80s, left more interesting by the live performance.

Ricardo Cabral - Baleia, Baleia, Baleia © Telma Mota |

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #20 The They Play a Telecaster, So Does Carlos edition by Carlos Fortes & Raquel Pinheiro @ Yé Yé Radio
Fender American Telecaster Blue with CB5 Bula neck pickup, 5-position switch (Bula installation) © Carlos Fortes
The beautiful Telecaster that illustrates this posts belongs to Carlos Fortes (Mão Morta/Um Zero AmareloI. For those, like me, more geeky inclined, it’s a Fender American Telecaster Blue with CB Bula neck pickup, 5-position switch (Bula installation). For Amazing Songs & Other Delights #20 The They Play a Telecaster, So Does Carlos edition tomorrow (Monday 14th) on Yé Yé Radio: https://yeyeradio.com/ or on the app from about 2:20pm to 4pm, Carlos and I picked 25 songs played/written with a Telecaster or predominantly played/written with one, including two of his – Sem Perdão by Um Zero Amarelo chosen by him and Budapeste by Mão Morta chosen by me. This is the first of the twin shows – the Stratocaster edition will be aired in a couple of weeks. A while ago I had asked Carlos if he preferred a Telecaster or a Stratocaster, he said he liked both, having no preference for one over the other. Coupled with Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem) love of Telecasters – another source of endless conversations and inspiration - the idea for the shows was born.
With its Telecaster name the guitar created by Leo Fender, in his Southern California company, was introduced in 1951. Leo had originally named the guitar 1950 Broadcaster (the Broadcaster was introduced in 1950), but complains from other makers made him change it to Telecaster. The Fender Telecaster turned 70 in 2021. The basic Telecaster guitar remains similar to its 1951 version. Not all Telecasters are Fender. Other makers produce their version of a Telecaster. Some players alter features in their Telecasters, turning them more unique and special. Our 25 songs include Prince’s iconic Hohner Madcat Telecaster, Carlos’ own Fender Telecaster with custom build Bula pickup and 5-position switch installation, also from the hands of Bula - a friend of Carlos who custom builds pickups. Telecasters with B-Benders are also represented in the hands of Clarence White and Jack White. Jeff Beck’s Telecaster from The Yardbirds’ Ever Since The World Began is the one he gave to Jimmy Page (Page named it Dragon) with which Page plays Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. We included a variety of players and eras to showcase the History and versatility of the Telecaster. From Muddy Waters to P.J. Harvey through Graham Coxon, Syd Barret, Johnny Marr, Keith Richards, Chrissie Hynde, Jimi Hendrix, Jonny Greenwood, Britt Daniel and more there is over one and an half hour of songs with a Telecaster and those who play it.
