Night Shades are a duo turned quartet led by Shaun Blackwell and Clare McNamara, New Zealanders from Wellington the band's guitarists and singers. Their path is something similar to Australians The Birthday Party when they left their Melbourne and went to London to show themselves to the world, believing that there would be greater opportunities to promote their music and career. It was there both musicians strengthened their project in 2014 with the arrival of Niall on drums and Stella on bass. Last Wednesday, the eve of a holiday, they performed for the first time in Portugal at Barracuda - Clube de Roque, in a free admission concert, thanks in advance to Rodas, the owner of the bar which lead to a flood of people.
Musically Night Shades are within garage rock with proto-punk and rock'n'roll forays into a more trash-rock, surf and American side. Simply put, anyone who is a fan of The Cramps, The Gun Club, Link Ray or The Sonics will surely appreciate them. That is my case. After listening carefully to their record on the usual platforms, I became aware of most of their tracks. They are a band that discographically shows quality and good taste, diversified in several styles and colors, understanding movements and emotions, which is reason for satisfaction. It was with a high expectation that I went to your concert in order to gauge their live quality.
I found this concert in Porto too lukewarm and docile for my expectations. When the band seemed to be warming up the audience it was already at the end of the show and it was obvious that the concert could have been different. I was somewhat disappointed because I expected much more from the band's performance. In purely musical terms, it is a competent collective that has its set well controlled and studied, but lacks the visceral madness that its music compels the audience to.
In a nutshell: they are discographically a good interesting to know, you will not lose your time, but in concert (at least on this one), there is still much to grow in the performative approach to the bigger and universal names above-mentioned.

Os Night Shades são um duo feito quarteto, comandado por Shaun Blackwell e Clare McNamara, neo-zelandeses oriundos de Wellington, ambos guitarristas e vocalistas deste projeto. O seu percurso é algo similar aos australianos The Birthday Party, quando estes partiram da sua Melbourne, rumo a Londres, para se darem a conhecer ao mundo, acreditando que ali teriam oportunidades maiores para a divulgação da sua música e carreira. É lá que os dois músicos consolidam o seu projeto, em 2014, com a entrada de Niall para a bateria e de Stella para o baixo. Na passada quarta-feira, véspera de feriado, apresentaram-se pela primeira vez em Portugal, no Barracuda - Clube de Roque, num concerto de entrada livre ao público, que se agradece desde já ao Rodas, o dono do bar, e que proporcionou uma enchente de público.
Musicalmente os Night Shades estão dentro do garage rock, com incursões ao proto-punk e ao rock’n’roll na vertente mais trash-rock, ao surf e à americana. Para simplificar, quem é fã de The Cramps, The Gun Club, Link Ray ou The Sonics, apreciará seguramente os Night Shades. Sendo esse o meu caso, e após escuta atenta dos seus registos discográficos nas plataformas habituais, fiquei sensibilizado para a maioria dos seus temas. É banda que discograficamente denota qualidade e bom gosto, sendo diversificada em vários estilos e cores, entenda-se andamentos e emoções, o que é motivo de satisfação. Foi com uma expetativa elevada que acorri ao seu concerto para poder aferir ao vivo da sua qualidade.
Achei este seu concerto no Porto demasiado morno e dócil para o que esperava da banda. Quando o grupo parecia estar a aquecer o público, foi já no final do seu espetáculo e ficou a nitída sensação que o concerto podia ter sido outro. Fiquei algo desiludido pois esperava muito mais da atuação da banda. Em termos puramente musicais, é coletivo competente e que tem o seu set bem controlado e estudado, mas faltou a loucura visceral que a sua música obriga para com o público.
Resumindo: é uma boa banda discograficamente e interessante para se conhecer, não darão por perdido o vosso tempo, mas que em concerto (pelo menos neste), tem ainda muito para crescer na aproximação performativa a nomes maiores e universais, e que referi acima.
