The Cosmic Dead + Greengo, Woodstock 69

The
night started with Porto’s band Greengo. Be warned, I'm a professed fan of the
band. Greengo are a colossus! I love the heavy, sickly, crawling doom and
psychiatric sound of most of their themes. The duo has an unusual ability to mentally
make us "dance and rock" from the first to the last theme of their
show. They create a slow headbanging in the audience, completely revitalizing
to the soul. It is impressing to note that an excellent bass riff is followed
by others that are even more sublime than the previous one, leaving us no time
or space to breathe. The intensity of the band's sound is something that definitely
penetrates the soul ... and takes no prisoners.
There
is a perfect and rare combination of bass and drums, in which all possible
spaces are well filled by both instruments. The group has in Chaka a drummer
with a rhythmically fantastic and exemplary work (one of the best that I’ve heard
live in latest years) that undoubtedly contributed decidedly a lot for the
magic and the difference that they show in regard to other similar bands. And
obviously, when it comes to Pedro Martelo, the duo’s lead singer and bass player,
there is very little to comment upon since he is one of the new emerging values
within the current national musical landscape and renowned in different
musical areas.
It was
the third time I saw Greengo in Porto (also the third time they played a gig in
Porto) and I've always considered them a band that plays very loud, much louder
than other bands. This time the sound was more than excellent; Greengo played
as loud as ever, but without hurting my eardrums. The sound was refined loud
and very pleasant. It was fantastic and memorable. Bring on the next one.
Greengo
were followed by Scots The Cosmic Dead, the band that drew all the attention in
the line-up. The group's sound is, in essence, an up-to-date Hawkind clone for this
age. Strongly psychedelic, always allowing their free improvisation side to be
perceived, mostly because of their keyboard’s player reveries and the
interesting way he uses the Hawaiian slide guitar along with the keyboards, the
sound is almost always within a registry of organized chaos. Live they’re
undeniably heavy, although it feels that their drummer is more for the
lightness of jazz than for the brutality of their distorted sound. That to say
that I have identified many moments in their themes that asked for some more
imaginative and not so square beats and constant "banging" in the
crashes and rides.
In all fairness
I found The Cosmic Dead's concert amid dull and surprising, there was room for
various moods. Just like a troubled trip, between a national road with many
holes and a perfect highway. Glasgow’s quartet offers a psychedelic trip during
their performance, always at a single speed, using mainly the same formulas, that
are sometimes repetitive and monotonous. In the last two themes the band
surpassed itself and geaged into an exhilataring manner, tearing everything
apart transmuting into an epic finale that will remain in the memory of the those
in attendance. Downright wrecking and anarchic. Twenty-five minutes of this pure
hallucinating tone that for me saved the whole concert that I was finding
boring. I wonder why they did not start
like this by the end of the second or third theme and carried on until the end.
It would have been fantastic.

Abriram as hostilidades os portuenses Greengo.
Sou fã assumido desta banda, aviso já a navegação. Os Greengo são um colosso!
Adoro o som pesado e doentio, rastejantemente doom e psiquiátrico de grande
parte dos seus temas. O duo tem uma capacidade incomum de nos fazer “dançar e
balançar” mentalmente desde o primeiro ao último tema do seu espetáculo. É um
headbanging lento aquele que provocam no público, mas completamente
revitalizador para a alma. É impressionante
constatar que a um excelente riff de baixo se seguem outros ainda mais sublimes
do que o anterior, não nos deixando tempo nem espaço para respirar. A
intensidade do som da banda é algo que nos penetra a alma, definitivamente… e
que não faz prisioneiros.
Há uma perfeita e rara conjugação
entre o baixo e bateria, em que todos os espaços possÃveis são bem preenchidos
por ambos os instrumentos. O grupo tem em Chaka um baterista com um trabalho
ritmicamente fantástico e exemplar (dos melhores que tenho ouvido nos últimos
anos ao vivo), o que contribuà decididamente em muito para a magia e a diferença
que evidenciam em relação ao resto das outras bandas do género. E obviamente,
em relação ao Pedro Martelo, o vocalista e baixista do duo, há muito pouco a
comentar, já que é um dos novos valores emergentes dentro do panorama musical
nacional da atualidade, reconhecido em diferentes quadrantes musicais.
Foi a terceira vez que vi os
Greengo no Porto (também as três vezes em que se apresentaram ao vivo na
Invicta) e sempre os considerei uma banda que toca muito alto, bem mais alto
que outras bandas. Desta vez o som estava mais do que excelente; os Greengo
tocaram muito alto como sempre, mas sem magoar os meus tÃmpanos. O som estava
refinadamente alto e muito agradável. Foi fantástico e memorável. Venha o
próximo.
Aos Greengo, seguiram-se os
escoceses The Cosmic Dead, a banda onde recaÃam todas as atenções do cartaz. O som do
grupo é essencialmente uma clonagem atualizada dos Hawkind para os dias de
hoje. Fortemente psicadélicos, a deixarem sempre perceber o seu lado de
improvisação free, muito por conta dos devaneios do seu teclista e da forma
interessante como usa a slide guitar havaina com as teclas, o som é quase
sempre dentro de um registo de caos organizado. A banda ao vivo é
inegavelmente pesada, embora considere que o seu baterista está mais para a
leveza do jazz do que para a brutalidade do som distorcido que o coletivo
pratica. Isto para dizer que identifiquei muitos momentos dos seus temas em que
se pedia algumas batidas mais imaginativas e não tão quadradas e de constantes
“pratadas” nos crashes e nos rides.
Sinceramente achei o concerto dos The Cosmic Dead
entre o chato e o surpreendente, houve lugar para vários estados de espÃrito.
Tal qual uma viagem atribulada, entre uma estrada nacional com muitos buracos e
uma autoestrada perfeita. O quarteto de Glasgow oferece durante o seu
espetáculo uma viagem psicadélica sempre a uma quase só velocidade, usando
essencialmente sempre as mesmas fórmulas, o que fica, a momentos, algo
repetitivo e monótono. Nos dois últimos temas da noite a banda excede-se e
entra em modo alucinante, partindo a loiça toda e transmutando-se para um final
épico que ficará na memória de todos os presentes. Simplesmente demolidor e
anárquico, como podem concluir no visionamento do presente vÃdeo. Vinte e cinco
minutos neste registo de pura alucinação, e que, para mim, salvaram todo um
concerto, que estava a achar uma seca. Pergunto-me porque é que não entraram
assim ao final do segundo ou terceiro tema e até ao final. Teria sido
fantástico.
